How To Clean Engine Oil From Carpets

153517859When motor oil soaks in carpet fibers, the stain can easily become permanent. Prompt action is therefore needed to protect your carpet. Fortunately, getting rid stains associated with oil-based products from clothing and carpet fibers is relatively easy. The following are some tips on how to clean engine oil from carpets.

Cleaning Supplies

You will obviously need a cleaning solution. This will depend on the type of carpet you have. If you have an oriental rug, you can mix 1 quart water with mild grease-cutting liquid dish-washing soap and use it as the cleaning solution. If you have a carpet made of wool, you can use an aerosol brake parts cleaner. Afterwards, you can use dry-cleaning solution. For carpets with synthetic fibers, you can rub the affected area with isoprophl alcohol.
You will also need an absorbent. White paper towels are perfect for this purpose. Other key requirements include; a white washcloth, plastic spoon and weights – a heavy book will do just fine.

It is important you act quickly to remove as much engine oil as possible. Use the plastic spoon to scoop as much oil as you can, taking precautions not to spread it. Blot the affected area with a folded paper towel, but do not rub. Work from the outside in until the towel picks up no more oil. Pour a small amount of the cleaning solution onto the wash cloth. Blot the stained area with the washcloth using a lifting motion as opposed to a circular motion. Work from the outside in. Continue with the blotting until the stain is completely removed. If the stain persists, consider applying a few drops of the cleaning solution directly to the stained area and let it stand for around five minutes. Stack a few paper towels directly on top of the stained area and place a heavy book or any other type of weight on top and give them time to absorb the remaining liquid from the carpet. After a few hours, vacuum the dry carpet to restore its texture and remove any residue of the cleaning solution. We recommend you act quickly to improve your chances of removing the engine oil stain completely.
