How To Safely Use Jackhammers

517722529When operating jackhammers, a certain technique needs to be applied in order to ensure that no damage is done to people and the work environment. Generally used to drill through hard surfaces, such as concrete and asphalt, the power tool is strong and hard to control. One needs to consider the high temperature of the different parts of the Jackhammer, as well as the  safety precautions detailed in the operation manual. Most skilled workers bend over the tool to prevent it from jumping up too high causing personal injury.

Jackhammers work based on a combination of pressure and vibration. The machinery operates at  a high speed, therefore, protective clothing needs to be worn all the time. The positioning of the jackhammer is also crucial: it should never have a 90 degree angle to the surface, but has to be positioned at a slight angle. Due to the high risk of injury, it is important that operators barricade the work area and place warning signs on the barriers, to ensure the safety of the public and other workers in the area.

In some cases the jackhammer can get stuck on the surface. This can be prevented by operating the tool in a small angle. However, if this happens, workers should try to move the tool side to side. If the bit is still stuck, it should be released, and another bit needs to be used to free the head.

A protective clothing needs to be worn all the time. Strong, protective gloves need to be worn all the time, due to the fast speed motion of the tool that can cause damage to the skin on the hand. Due to the loud sound of the tool, hearing protection earphones should be worn at all time. Steel toed boots should also be worn to protect the feet from the accidental movement of the drill head. Protective eyewear is also recommended, due to the dust and pieces of asphalt being moved during the drilling process, which can accidentally get in the eye, causing serious injury.
